The Underdog Football Show

On Sunday 1 November 2026, an eighth-tier club in Northamptonshire announced a new striker. He was 40 and had announced his retirement in October. Nobody expected that.

Chris Horwedel, host of The Underdog Football Show, saved the story for the end of the episode "It's a Bad Time to be a Manchester Football Team". He called it his favorite part of the show. It also answers a question that sounds simple: what is a phoenix club in football?

A phoenix club is a new club formed to replace one that has gone bust. It often has a similar name to the old one. It keeps the supporters, but it is a separate legal body. It usually has to start again low down the pyramid.

What is a phoenix club in football?

The name comes from the bird that rises from its own ashes. In football it describes a new entity set up to succeed a club that collapsed through insolvency or liquidation.

The new club does not inherit the old one's league place. The Football Association enforces rules that stop successors from taking over a predecessor's position. The FA decides which level the new club enters, and that is usually a level that suits its local area. Bury AFC started in the tenth tier, far below the old Bury's fourth-tier standing.

The best-known case is AFC Wimbledon. It was formed in 2002 after Wimbledon FC was rebranded as MK Dons and moved some 60 miles away to Milton Keynes. The fans started in the ninth-tier Combined Counties League and ended up in League One.

Not every phoenix is built the same way. One writer points out that "phoenix club" is shorthand, and the stories are not legally identical. Macclesfield's original club was liquidated in September 2020, and a local businessman bought its assets the next month. Rushden took the other route. The fans did it themselves.

Is the phoenix club real, or just the old club in new shirts?

It is real. It is also new. Both are true, which is the odd part.

The original Rushden & Diamonds was formed in 1992 by a merger of Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds. They won the Conference in 2000-01 and earned a place in the Football League.

Ten years later it was over. The club was expelled from the Conference National on 11 June 2011, because its finances meant it could not guarantee finishing its fixtures. HM Revenue and Customs lodged a winding-up petition, and the reported debts were £750,000. The club entered administration on 7 July.

Horwedel said the original club went into liquidation in 2011 and disappeared, but supporters refused to let that be the end. He said they formed AFC Rushden & Diamonds as a phoenix club.

If you typed "the phoenix club" into a search bar and got a Bolton comedy venue, that is a different thing. It comes from a Peter Kay show. It has never signed a striker.

How did supporters rebuild Rushden & Diamonds?

Slowly, and with some admin. At an open meeting chaired by a supporters group called SaveRDFC, fans agreed to create a phoenix club fully owned and controlled by its supporters.

They missed the first deadline. The new club failed to register a senior side in time, so it ran a youth team in 2011-12. The first senior competitive match was a 3-0 win over Thrapston Town in front of 784 supporters. The club finished second and won promotion in that first senior season. The title came in 2014-15.

The structure matters as much as the results. Horwedel described it as supporter ownership with a one-member, one-vote model. The club runs as a Community Benefit Society accredited by the Football Supporters' Association, built on the principle of One Fan, One Vote.

It is bigger than a first team. The club has 750 members and 30 teams of all ages, including women's and girls' sides and a multi-disability team. That is what a rebuilt club is for.

“Clubs can disappear, supporters can rebuild them, and sometimes more than 20 years later, a player who started with the original club comes back.”
— Chris Horwedel, on The Underdog Football Show

It has not been a straight line up. Three promotions in six years took them to the seventh tier, where they spent five years before dropping to the Northern Premier League Midlands.

How did an eighth-tier club reach the FA Cup first round?

By starting in August. Diamonds began in the extra preliminary round. They then beat Kimberley Miners Welfare, Long Eaton United, Desborough Town, Peterborough Sports and Braintree Town.

That earned a home tie with Morecambe in the fourth qualifying round. Morecambe play in National League North, and the tie at Hayden Road was expected to sell out. Diamonds got through it.

Horwedel said it is the first time this version of the club has reached the first round proper. The club's own statement agrees. It calls the trip to Burton Albion a first for AFC Rushden & Diamonds. Burton are in the third tier.

The first FA Cup run was shorter. In 2013-14 they beat four clubs, then lost 3-1 at Dover Athletic in the third qualifying round.

The tie is on Saturday 7 November, with a 3pm GMT kick-off. The result is not in here.

Where does the Phoenix Rising soccer team play?

Not in Northamptonshire. This is a different Phoenix.

Phoenix Rising FC was founded in 2014 as Arizona United Soccer Club and plays in the USL Championship, the second division of American soccer. It plays at Phoenix Rising Soccer Stadium, east of downtown Phoenix. The ground sits near 38th and Washington streets, just north of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The first game there was on 1 April 2023.

The stadium has been on the move. It is modular, so the club had it rebuilt in Phoenix after the 2022 season. It had already been relocated once, to Wild Horse Pass in 2021, before moving again in 2023.

Is it a phoenix club in the English sense? No. The name fits the city. There is a faint echo, though. The franchise launched in March 2014 and took the place of Phoenix FC, which folded the day before.

Why did Billy Sharp sign for AFC Rushden & Diamonds?

Horwedel said Sharp joined the original Rushden & Diamonds on loan in 2005 and scored the first goal of his professional career there. The record backs him up. Sharp scored nine goals in 16 appearances on that loan from Sheffield United. One was a last-gasp winner in a 3-2 win over Northampton Town, and he also scored a hat-trick against Boston United.

The reason for the signing is plain. The club said it needed help because James Clifton was suspended. Sharp also has a shot at a 300th career goal. That is a lot of publicity for a cover signing.

Horwedel's view is that Sharp is not joining an eighth-tier side for money or prestige. He is going back to a place that mattered at the start of his career. For Rushden supporters, Horwedel said, it means something that a player with that history wants to be part of the club's next big moment. "It's impossible not to love stories like that," he said.

There is a catch, and it is a fair one. One report notes that Sharp's link is to the town and its football history, and that he is a new signing for the current club. He never played for AFC. The shirt is the same white. The company is not.

Does that spoil it? Hardly. The old club's fans are the new club's fans, and they have waited 15 years for a day like this.

Sharp admitted in an interview that he once did not know much about the place. He said that when Sheffield United suggested the loan, he did not know who Rushden & Diamonds were, or where in the country it was. Twenty-one years on, he has the postcode.
