Why Did Madonna Kiss Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera?
Why did Madonna kiss Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs? The stunt revived her first VMA act and gave two younger stars a bold new image.

On August 28, 2003, Madonna stepped out of a giant wedding cake at Radio City Music Hall. She wore black coattails and a top hat. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera waited in bridal white.
Madonna kissed both women because the opening act was built to make news. It revived her bridal performance from the first MTV Video Music Awards and put two younger pop stars beside her. To the hosts of Circle The Block, the kisses looked like Madonna handing them the spotlight.
That reading makes sense. It also leaves room for the plain fact that a live TV shock can be art and publicity at once.
Why did Madonna kiss Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs?
MTV wanted an opening people would discuss the next morning. Former MTV president Van Toffler told Rolling Stone that he invited Madonna to help mark the awards show’s past. He gave her a large opening slot and room to shape it.
The reference was hard to miss. At the first VMAs in 1984, Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress. Nineteen years later, Spears and Aguilera began the new show singing that song in bridal clothes. Madonna arrived dressed as their groom.
Rello Desaya calls the kisses a “passing the torch moment” in the Circle The Block episode “Madonna’s VMA Kiss & the Night Prince Lost It on Michael.” Cunda agrees, though he wonders if viewers caught that meaning while the act was happening. Fair question. The crowd had little time to study the staging before Madonna kissed Spears and turned to Aguilera.
The symbolism is a reading of the act, not a private promise Madonna made to either singer. MTV’s staff had a more direct goal. Set designer Ron Norsworthy told Nylon that Madonna wanted them on newspaper covers the next day.
What happened during the opening performance?
Madonna’s daughter Lourdes appeared as a flower girl. Spears and Aguilera emerged with their faces hidden by veils, then sang “Like a Virgin.” Madonna rose from the cake in her groom’s outfit as the music moved into “Hollywood.”
The wedding setup did useful work. It joined Madonna’s old VMA image to the two singers standing with her in 2003. Then it gave her a reason, within the stage scene, to kiss each bride.
First she kissed Spears. Then she kissed Aguilera. The performance kept going: Missy Elliott joined them for “Work It.” In a matter of minutes, the show had brought together four stars whose music did not usually share one stage.
Rello remembers watching with his mother, seated on the floor against their couch. Her reaction, as he recalls it, was to blame Madonna for bringing this sight to an awards show. It is a better measure of the night than any claim that everyone responded the same way. Some viewers cheered. Others were startled.
Why did the kisses look like a passing of the torch?
Madonna had earned her place in that wedding cake. The 1984 “Like a Virgin” performance had made her a fixture of VMA history, and she was still headlining the show in 2003. Bringing Spears and Aguilera into a remake put their fame next to hers.
It also put their changing images in full view. Both had become stars while young, with fans and the press watching them grow up. By 2003, they could choose a far more daring TV act. Aguilera had already released “Dirrty,” so her move away from a clean teen image was well underway.
“It was basically a passing the torch moment, bro.”
That difference matters. MTV director Beth McCarthy Miller later told Nylon that she thought the kiss carried a bigger image change for Spears. Aguilera, in her view, had already made one. Calling the moment a shared handoff can hide how differently the two women arrived at it.
Cunda says viewers may have been too caught up in the kiss to see the handoff at all. Rello, who was starting his junior year of high school, remembers the talk that followed. The act could be read in two ways at once: a nod to Madonna’s past and a very current bid for attention.
Was the kiss planned or spontaneous?
The place for a kiss was in the act before it aired. MTV staff knew enough to discuss it ahead of time, and Madonna’s team kept rehearsals closely guarded. McCarthy Miller told Nylon that, when she saw an early run-through, the performers kissed on the cheek.
Spears has since described a smaller decision made just before the cameras rolled. In her memoir The Woman in Me, she wrote that rehearsals had used an air kiss. Waiting beside the stage, she thought about whether she should go further. She wanted another memorable VMA moment, like her 2000 performance.
So the choice is not neatly “planned” or “unplanned.” The act had a kiss built into it. Spears says she decided to make hers real at the last moment. The visible result belonged to a show that had been rehearsed for weeks and a singer making a live choice inside it.
The short clip at the start of the Circle The Block episode catches Spears’s first reaction to the attention. She says she felt blessed, then adds that kissing Madonna was bound to create “some hype.” It did.
Why did MTV cut to Justin Timberlake?
Timberlake was in the audience. He and Spears had split in 2002, and their relationship remained public business. Once Madonna kissed Spears, the live broadcast cut to his face. Much of Madonna’s kiss with Aguilera went unseen by viewers at home.
Rello remembers the cut vividly. He says the camera moved to Timberlake so fast that the audience nearly missed Aguilera’s turn. Cunda objects on practical grounds: why look away from the stage right then?
The people making the show had their own answer. Rolling Stone reported that associate director Stefani Cohen saw Timberlake’s expression on a camera feed and chose the reaction shot. The people interviewed for that account said the exact cut was not decided in advance. McCarthy Miller later told Nylon she felt bad about losing Aguilera’s kiss, yet still valued the shot of Timberlake.
His face became part of the story. That does not prove what he felt. A few seconds of live TV can show an expression; it cannot read a person’s mind. The cut does show how quickly the broadcast shifted attention from Aguilera’s act to Spears’s former boyfriend.
How did Christina Aguilera and viewers react?
Aguilera noticed what the cut cost her. Speaking to Andy Cohen in 2018, she called it “a cheap shot.” She remembered seeing the next day’s newspaper and realizing she had been left out of much of the coverage. She also had another performance that night: “Fighter,” with Dave Navarro.
The wider reaction was mixed. Former MTV staff told Rolling Stone that the network received angry mail. Nylon reported that the New York Post led its coverage with both kisses, while other responses ranged from delight to disapproval. The act had made news as Madonna intended, though the news did not treat its two younger stars equally.
Rello and Cunda hear the 2003 audience from their own seats in the past. Rello recalls how unusual the sight felt on television. Cunda wonders if people in the rush of the moment saw the older star making room for two younger ones. Listen to their exchange and the camera cut becomes the sharpest detail: Madonna kissed both brides, but television had already picked which face to show next.

People also ask
Did Madonna kiss Christina Aguilera as well as Britney Spears?+
Yes. Madonna kissed Spears and then Aguilera during the opening act at the 2003 MTV VMAs. Viewers at home saw much less of Aguilera’s kiss because the broadcast cut to Justin Timberlake in the audience. That camera choice helps explain why Spears’s kiss is more often remembered.
Was the Madonna and Britney Spears kiss rehearsed?+
A kiss was part of the act, and the performers rehearsed the number before the show. Spears wrote in *The Woman in Me* that they had practiced an air kiss. She says she decided shortly before going onstage to make her kiss with Madonna real.
Why was Justin Timberlake shown during the kiss?+
Timberlake, who had dated Spears, was sitting in the audience. MTV’s live production team chose to show his reaction after Madonna kissed her. The cut covered much of Madonna’s kiss with Aguilera. It does not establish what Timberlake was thinking as he watched.
What songs did they perform at the 2003 VMAs?+
Spears and Aguilera opened with Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” echoing her performance at the first VMAs in 1984. Madonna joined them as the music moved into “Hollywood.” Missy Elliott then appeared for “Work It.” The kisses took place during that opening act, rather than as a separate award-show segment.
