WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2023 WBD/DC Release of “Blue Beetle” or do not mind hearing key plot points.
Blue Beetle was a film that was originally supposed to be released exclusively on the streaming app HBO Max. After Batgirl was canceled, the decision was made by Warner Bros. Discovery to release Blue Beetle in theaters. It stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle. It also stars Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. It was directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. It is the 14th entry into the DC Extended Universe.
Rosa Charra, a film critic for the Daily Chela website, made her first appearance on the podcast. In addition to reviewing the film, Charra discussed what it meant for her to see a Mexican-American as the titular character of a superhero film as someone who is Mexican-American.
